Drug-related Crimes
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 5252 or 20.2 percent of 26004 criminal cases recorded in 2020 were related to the illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, which is 19,8 percent more than 2019. 55.9 percent of them was illegal purchase, storage, preparation, processing, transportation of drugs or psychotropic substances in excess of their personal consumption without the purpose of sale, 36.1 percent the same actions for sale, as well as the production, shipping or illegal sale of these substances, 6.2 percent cultivating illegal crops containing drugs, 1.7 percent illicit trafficking of highly potent or toxic substances for sale and 0.1 percent other crimes.
During the reporting period, 4233 offenders were detained for the illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, 29,4 percent of them were previously prosecuted. 99,0 percent of offenders were involved in criminal responsibility, while 1,0 percent of them were exempted from criminal responsibility according to the law.
70,9 percent of people who committed a crime were those never worked and studied, 2,0 percent were women. 0,1 percent of the offenders were children aged 14-17, 7.6 percent young people aged 18-24, 17.4 percent 25-29, and 74.9 percent 30 and older.
In 2020, 3758.4 kilograms of drugs and psychotropic substances were seized, which is 13.3 percent more than last year. 2341,1 kilograms of illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances were heroin, 904,5 kilograms marijuana, 277,9 kilograms opium, 65,4 kilograms hashish, hashish oil and resin, 1,3 kilograms cocaine, 168,2 kilograms other drugs and powerful means .
