The situation on the corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic affected the tourism sector of Azerbaijan, as in other countries, and has caused a serious decline in this area since March 2020. There was a decrease in the indicators of hotels and similar establishments which are one of the main elements of tourism infrastructure in connection with implementation of the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and neighboring countries, as well as temporary restrictions on the travel of citizens in most countries of the world in order to prevent the spread of corona virus infection, the number of nights spent on hotels in the country in 2020 decreased by 3.3 times compared to 2019 and amounted to 999.8 thousand.

In 2020, 58.0% of the nights in hotels were registered in Baku, 9.7% in Gabala, 5.5% in Gusar, 4.1% in Guba, 3.2% in Lankaran, 3.1% in Naftalan, 2.4% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 1.9% in Shabran, 1.2% in Mingachevir, per 0.9% in Ganja, Khachmaz, Gakh, and Shamakhi, per 0.7% in Masalli and Zagatala and 5.9% in other districts (cities).

The number of nights spent by foreigners and stateless persons decreased by 5.4 times compared to 2019 and amounted to 416.7 thousand, representing 41.7% of total nights. 14.4% of the nights were citizens of the Russian Federation, 9.2% - Saudi Arabia, 9.2% - United Arab Emirates, 8.7% - Turkish citizens, 6.5% - Great Britain, 5.6% - India, 4.1% - citizens of Kuwait, 3.5% - Israel citizens, 2.8% - Iranian citizens, 2.3% - USA, 2.0% - Italy, 1.9% - Germany, 1.7% - Qatar citizens, 1.4% - Iraq, 1.4% - Kazakhstan, 1.3% - Pakistan, 1,3% - Ukraine, 1.1% - Belarus, 0,9% - Georgia, 20.7% - citizens of other countries. It should be noted that in April-December 2020, foreigners and stateless persons visited our country mainly for non-tourism purposes.

78.0% of the nights in hotels spent by foreigners and stateless persons were registered in Baku city, 6.1% in Gusar, 4.8% in Gabala, 3.7% in Naftalan, 3.4% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 2.1% in Guba, 1.9% in other districts and cities. The number of nights spent by the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan amounted to 583.1 thousand which is 1.9% less compared to 2019.

In 2020, hotels' revenues decreased by 3.9 times compared to 2019 and amounted to 116.8 million manats, 60.2% of which were services for the provision of rooms, 29.0% for catering services, 2.5% for treatment and health services, and 8.3% from other services.

In 2020, the average level of use of the number of hotels in the country was 6.5% (22.1% in 2019). This indicator was 23.0% in Beylagan, 15.5% in Shabran, 13.7% in Naftalan, 11.2% in Gabala, 9.6% in Baku, 9.6% in Goychay, 9.1% in Shamkir, 8.8% in Guba, 8.5% in Bilasuvar, 8.3% in Lankaran, 7.9% in Gusar, 7.3% in Sabirabad, 7.0% in Kurdamir, 6.7% in Shirvan, while in other cities and regions it was below average.
