Current state of tourism

The situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as in other countries, has not passed unnoticed in the tourism sector of Azerbaijan too. According to the State Border Service data, in 2020 Azerbaijan received from 155 countries of the world 795,7 thousand or 4,0 times less foreigners and stateless persons compared to 2019.

In order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection, the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the neighbor countries, as well as temporary restrictions on visits of citizens in most countries of the world, caused a sharp decrease in the number of arrivals in April-October of the current year and the visits made were mainly for non-tourism purposes.

In January-October 2020, 28,0 percent of the arrivals were from Russian Federation, 24,3 percent – Georgia, 18,9 percent - Turkey, 8,6 percent - Iran, 2,1 percent - Ukraine, 1,8 percent – India, 1,7 percent - Saudi Arabia, per 1,1 percent - Pakistan, Turkmenistan, the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan, 1,0 percent – Kuwait, 0,9 percent - Great Britain, 0,8 percent – Belarus, per 0,7 percent – Uzbekistan and Iraq, 0,6 percent - Israel, 5,4 percent - were citizens of other countries and 0,1 percent were stateless people. 79,6 percent of the arrivals were men and 20,4 percent were women.

In January-October of current year the number of arrivals from China decreased by 15,8 times, South Korea – 13,4 times, Israel - 10,4 times, Poland – 9,8 times, Japan – 9,5 times, Iraq – 8,9 times, Saudi Arabia - 8,3 times, Hungary – 8,0 times, Canada – 6,9 times, the USA - 6,8 times, Oman and the United Arab Emirates - 6,7 times, France – 5,9 times, Turkmenistan - 5,8 times, Germany – 5,6 times, Qatar – 5,5 times, the Netherlands – 5,2 times, Great Britain, Pakistan and Kazakhstan – 5,0 times, Italy - 4,4 times.

In general, the number of arrivals from EU member countries decreased by 5,7 times and amounted to 21,1 thousand persons, from Gulf countries it decreased by 4,7 times and amounted to 100,0 thousand persons and from the CIS countries it decreased by 4,0 times and amounted to 245,7 thousand persons.

69,3 percent of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 28,3 percent - air and 2,4 percent - water transport.

The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad decreased by 4,2 times compared with January-October 2019 and amounted to 1106,7 thousand persons. 30,3 percent of the country citizens traveled to Iran, 27,2 percent - Georgia, 19,2 percent - Russian Federation, 14,6 percent – Turkey and 8,7 percent to other countries. 70,1 percent of the travelers were men and 29,9 percent were women. During this period, the number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan traveling to Iran decreased by 5,1 times, Georgia - 4,5 times, Russian Federation - 3,8 times, Turkey - 3,3 times.

In January-October 2020, 75,3 percent of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 22,1 percent - air and 2,6 percent - water transport.
