The situation on the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affected the tourism sector of Azerbaijan, as in other countries, and has caused a serious decline in this area since March. There was a decrease in the indicators of hotels and similar establishments which are one of the main elements of tourism infrastructure in January-September 2020 compared to the corresponding period of previous year in connection with implementation of the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and neighboring countries, as well as temporary restrictions on the travel of citizens in most countries of the world in order to prevent the spread of corona virus infection, the number of nights spent on hotels in the country decreased by 69.8% and amounted to 806.0 thousand.

In January-September of current year 56.0% of the nights in hotels were registered in Baku, 10.7% in Gabala, 6.1% in Gusar, 4.9% in Guba, 3.6% in Naftalan, 2.8% in Lankaran, 2.5% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 1.4% in Shabran, per 1.1% in Mingachevir, Gakh and Khachmaz, 0.8% in Ganja and 7.9% in other districts (cities).

The number of nights spent by foreigners and stateless persons amounted to 370.5 thousand, representing 46.0% of total nights which is decreased by 78.8% less than January-September of previous year. 15.2% of the nights were citizens of the Russian Federation, 10.4% - Saudi Arabia, 10.3% - United Arab Emirates, 7.3% - Turkey, 6.1% - India, 6.0% - Great Britain, 4.6% - citizens of Kuwait, 3.2% - Israel citizens, 3.1% - Iranian citizens, 2.2% - USA, 1.8% - Qatar citizens, 1.7% - Germany, 1.6% - Iraq, 1.5% - Italy, 1.4% - Pakistan, 1.4% - Kazakhstan, 1,3% - Ukraine, 1,0% - Georgia, 1.0% - Belarus, 18.9% - citizens of other countries.

76.6% of the nights in hotels spent by foreigners and stateless persons were registered in Baku city, 6.7% in Gusar, 4.6% in Gabala, 4.2% in Naftalan, 3.5% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 2.3% in Guba, 2.1% in other districts and cities. The number of nights spent by the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan amounted to 435.5 thousand which is 52.8% less compared to January-September 2019.

In January-September of current year, hotels' revenues amounted to 94.9 million manat which is decreased by 71.6% less than the corresponding period of previous year, 58.9% of which were services for the provision of rooms, 29.6% for catering services, 2.9% for treatment and health services, and 8.6% from other services.

In January-September 2020, the use of one-time capacity of the hotels was at the level of 7.0% (23.6% on January-September of 2019). This indicator was 24.0% in Beylagan, 17.3% in Naftalan, 13.3% in Gabala, 12.1% in Shabran, 11.2% in Guba, 10.0% in Baku, 9.7% in Bilasuvar, 9.6% in Gusar, 9.3% in Goychay, 8.9% in Sabirabad, 8.9% in Shamkir, 7.8% in Lankaran, while in other cities and regions it was below average.
