“EU support to the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan to reach European standards” technical support project finalized

Conference dedicated to the outputs of the “EU support to the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan to reach European standards” technical support project completed in joint cooperation between the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan and European Union, was held in Baku on 22 January 2020. 

Participants of the Conference first visited the alley of Honour to pay tribute to the founder of our independent state, national leader of our people Heydar Aliyev and laid a wreath at his grave. Later, the participants of the event visited the Alley of Martyrs and commemorated the heroic sons of Motherland who died in the struggle for independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

After Mr Tahir Budagov, Chairman of the State Statistical Committee opened the conference, Mr Ali Ahmadov, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Coordination Council on Sustainable Development of Azerbaijan Republic and Mr Kestutis Jankauskas, Head of the EU Delegation in Azerbaijan made their speeches.   

Later, Mr Rimantas Juozas Vaicenavicius, Team Leader of the Project made presentation on “EU support to the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan to reach European standards: purposes and achievements”, Mr Ronald Delemont, Head of Statistics, ICON Institute – “Consortium of the project: result-oriented cooperation”, Mr Gasim Aliyev, Head of the Department of Statistical Works Coordination and Strategic Planning of the State Statistical Committee – “Components of the project: targets and results”.

The reports “On state-of-the-art strategies of meeting user demands in official statistics” by Mr Tjark-Tsin-A-Tsoi, Director General of Statistics Netherlands, “The role of the standardization of the statistical processes in development of the European Statistical System” by Ms Jurate Petrauskiene, Director General of Statistics Lithuania, “The role of the sustainable international cooperation in development of official statistics” by Mr Sergey Tsvetarsky, President of the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria and “Contribution of the European statistics to the international statistical system” by Mr Seven Vale, Regional Adviser on Statistics, UNECE were listened.

It was noted that “EU support to the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan to reach European standards” technical support project is the third after two Twinning projects implemented by the State Statistical Committee in joint cooperation with European Union. Within the project of a great importance in improvement of statistical system of the country, expert missions of partner countries to the State Statistical Committee were organized, staff of the State Statistical Committee visited the Netherlands, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Portugal and Romania and learned international experience in implementation of statistical classifications, producer price indices, statistical quality management system and etc.

At the same time, the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of statistics between the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Statistics Netherlands was held. Mr Tahir Budagov, Chairman of the State Statistical Committee and Mr Tjark-Tsin-A-Tsoi, Director General of Statistics Netherlands signed the Memorandum of Understanding.

Questions of the participants of the conference and media representatives were also answered at the conference.

It should be pointed out that, it is envisaged the heads of national statistical institutions of the Netherlands, Lithuania and Bulgaria to have speeches on recent innovations in the European and national statistical system for academic staff and students of the Azerbaijan State University of Economics.
