Workshop “Modernisation of Official Statistics”, Nizhny Novgorod, Russian Federation

Representatives of the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan G.Aliyev - Head of Department of Quality Management and Information Technologies of the State Statistical and T.Ajalov - Deputy Head of the Department on Coordination of Statistical Works of the State Statistical Committee participated in the workshop on “Modernisation of Official Statistics” organized by the State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation (ROSSTAT), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on 10-12 June, 2014 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russian Federation.
The objective of the workshop was to discuss, with the Heads of national statistical organisations and senior staff with responsibility for statistical infrastructure, the standards needed to support statistical modernisation activities, and advised them on how to implement those standards in practice.
Representatives of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Armenia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Italy, Netherlands, and Norway as well as representatives of State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation, the European Free Trade Association, the UN Economic Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and others participated in the workshop.
Following topics discussed during the workshop; introduction to the Generic Statistical Business Process Model (GSBPM), the Generic Statistical Information Model (GSIM) and the work of the High-Level Group for the Modernization of Statistical Production and Services; development of the Common Statistical Production Architecture; experiences of implementing production standards in practice – case studies from participating countries; standards for data transmission – Statistical Data and Metadata exchange (SDMX) and the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI); implementing SDMX and DDI standards in practice; how to move forward with statistical modernization in beneficiary countries, supporting the outcomes of recent Global Assessments of national statistical systems and the related UN Development Account project on Strengthening national capacity for the sustainable development of statistics.
Representatives of the State Statistical Committee presented presentation on “Statistical Metadata System in the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan”. The presentation was about metadata concept, the reasons of creation of Statistical metadata system (SMS), the Basis for applying of SMS, Main standards applied in the State Statistical Committee (Committee), State Statistical Committee Structure, State Statistical Committee and “GSBPM”, Classifications in the Committee and the State Register of statistical units, Official web page of the State Statistics Committee, Implemented activities on the SMS creation and future objectives.
