Current state of tourism
The situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as in other countries, has not passed unnoticed in the tourism sector of Azerbaijan too, and has led to a serious decline in this field since March. According to the State Border Service data, in January-May 2020 Azerbaijan received from 152 countries of the world 563.9 thousand or 1.9 percent less foreigners and stateless persons compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. During this period, 30,2 percent of the arrivals were from Russian Federation, 27,3 percent – Georgia, 13,2 percent - Turkey, 6,7 percent - Iran, 2,2 percent - India, per 2,1 percent - Saudi Arabia and Ukraine, 1,4 percent - the United Arab Emirates, per 1,3 percent - Pakistan, Kuwait and Kazakhstan, 1,1 percent - Turkmenistan, per 0,9 percent - Iraq and Great Britain, 0,8 percent - Uzbekistan, 0,7 percent - Israel, 6,4 percent - were citizens of other countries and 0,1 percent were stateless people. 75,1 percent of the arrivals were men and 24,9 percent were women.
In January-May of current year the number of arrivals from China had decreased by 5,5 times, South Korea – 4,4 times, the United Arab Emirates - by 4,1 times, Poland - by 3,8 times, Japan - by 3,7 times, Great Britain – by 3,5 times, Canada and Israel – by 3,3 times, Hungary – by 3,2 times, the USA and France – by 3,1 times, Germany and the Netherlands - by 3,0 times, Italy - by 2,9 times, Malaysia and Turkmenistan – by 2,7 times.
In general, the number of arrivals from EU member countries decreased by 3,4 times and amounted to 16,2 thousand persons, from Gulf countries it decreased by 2,2 times and amounted to 75,3 thousand persons and from the CIS countries it decreased by 1,9 times and amounted to 205,4 thousand persons.
66,9 percent of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 31,6 percent - air and 1,5 percent - water transport.
The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad decreased by 2,2 times compared with January-May 2019 and amounted to 958,8 thousand persons. 33,5 percent of the country citizens traveled to Iran, 29,7 percent - Georgia, 20,4 percent - Russian Federation, 9,6 percent – Turkey and 6,8 percent to other countries. 69,3 percent of the travelers were men and 30,7 percent were women. During this period, the number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan traveling to Iran decreased by 2,5 times, Turkey - by 2,2 times, Georgia - by 2,0 times, Russian Federation - by 1,9 times.
In January-May 2020, 82,0 percent of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 16,4 percent - air and 1,6 percent - water transport.
