Activities of hotels and similar establishments
The rapid spread of coronavirus infection around the world had a negative impact on the tourism sector in most countries. This situation was also observed in our country and in January-March of current year, compared to the corresponding period of previous year, there was a decrease in the indicators of hotels and similar establishments which are one of the main elements of tourism infrastructure. The number of nights spent on hotels in the country decreased by 13.0% and amounted to 474.6 thousand. The main reason for the decrease was the significant reduction in the number of nights spent in March of current year due to the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and neighboring countries, as well as temporary restrictions on travel in most countries around the world to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. However, the number of nights spent on hotels in March decreased by 2.7 times compared to February and 2.9 times compared to March of previous year.
In the first quarter of this year 55.4% of the nights in hotels were registered in Baku, 9.8% in Gusar, 8.4% in Gabala, 5.1% in Naftalan, 4.6% in Guba, 3.8% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 2.0% in Lankaran, 1.7% in Shabran, 1.0% in Mingachevir, 0.8% in Ganja and 7.4% in other districts (cities).
The number of nights spent by foreigners and stateless persons amounted to 314.9 thousand, representing 66.4% of total nights which is 16.7% less than the first quarter of previous year. 15.9% of the nights were citizens of the Russian Federation, 12.0% - United Arab Emirates, 10.8% - Saudi Arabia, 7.1% - Turkish citizens, 6.7% - India, 5.3% - citizens of Kuwait, 4.0% - Great Britain, 3.6% - Iranian citizens, 3.2% - Israel citizens, 2.3% - USA, 1.9% - Qatar citizens, 1.8% - Iraq, 1.7% - Pakistan, 1.6% - Kazakhstan, 1.4% - Germany, 1.0% - Italy, 0.9% - Georgia, 0.9% - Bahrain, 17.9% - citizens of other countries.
73.4% of the nights in hotels spent by foreigners and stateless persons were registered in Baku city, 7.8% in Gusar, 5.2% in Gabala, 4.9% in Naftalan, 4.0% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 2.5% in Guba, 2.2% in other districts and cities. The number of nights spent by the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan amounted to 159.7 thousand which is 4.7% less compared to January-March 2019.
In the first quarter of current year, hotels' revenues amounted to 60.0 million manat or 15.8% less than the corresponding period of previous year, 58.5% of which were services for the provision of rooms, 27.8% for catering services, 3.9% for treatment and health services, and 9.8% from other services.
In January-March 2020, the average level of use of the number of hotels in the country was 12.2% (15.7% on January-March of 2019). This indicator was 43.4% in Naftalan, 27.2% in Beylagan, 26.9% in Gusar, 25.6% in Shabran, 18.7% in Gabala, 18.4% in Jalilabad, 18.3% in Guba, 17.3% in Baku, 16.5% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 15.3% in Sabirabad, 13.9% in Goychay, while in other cities and regions it was below average.
