Previous year number of population of the country increased by 0.8% or 83372 persons and became to 9981457 persons for the state of the 1st January 2019. 52.8 percent of the population is urban, 47.2 percent is rural residents, 49.9 percent is male and 50.1 percent is women.

For the beginning of the year, 4.6 percent of the population of the country lives in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 22.8 percent - Baku city, 20.3 percent - Aran, 12.9 percent - Ganja-Gazakh, 9.4 percent – Lankaran, 30.0 percent – other economic regions.  

Population density made 115 person per square kilometer and this indicator was 83 persons in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Baku – 1064, Lankaran and Absheron economic regions – per 154, Ganja-Gazakh economic region – 104, Aran economic region – 96, Yukhari Karabakh economic region – 93, Guba-Khachmaz economic region – 79, Sheki-Zagatala economic region – 70, Daghlig Shirvan economic region – 52, Kalbajar-Lachin economic region – 40 persons. 

138982 newborns by country in 2018 were registered by the region (city) Registration Departments of Ministry of Justice and this indicator made up 14.2 per 1000 person of population. 2752 of infants were twins, 117 triplets. This indicator in Daghlig Shirvan (16.3 per 1000 person), Lankaran, Aran and Guba-Khachmaz (15.4), Yukhari Kharabakh and Kalbajar-Lachin (14.6) economic regions was higher than the country level.

57250 deaths were registered in the country last year and the number of deaths was 5.8 per 1000 person.

Last year 62484 marriages and 14857 divorces were registered by the region (city) Registration Departments of Ministry of Justice and the number of marriages was 6.4 and divorces were 1.5 per 1000 person. Marriages in Kalbajar-Lachin (6.8 per 1000 person), Sheki-Zagatala, Guba-Khachmaz, Aran and Daghlig Shirvan economic regions (6.7), Baku city (6.6) and divorces in Baku city (2.1), Kalbajar-Lachin (2.0), Absheron and Yukhari Kharabakh (1.8) economic regions were higher than the country level.

In 2018 the relevant authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Migration Service registered 3220 person arrivals to Azerbaijan for permanent residence and 1580 person departures from the country and migration positive balance made up 1640 person.
