Development of tourism
According to the State Border Service data, in 2018 Azerbaijan received from 196 countries of the world 2849.6 thousand or 5.7% more foreigners and stateless persons compared with the previous year. 30.9% of the arrivals were from the Russian Federation, 21.4% - Georgia, 10.2% - Turkey, 8.5% - Iran, 3.3% - the United Arab Emirates, 2.6% - Saudi Arabia, 2.4% - Iraq, 2.0% - Ukraine, 1.4% - Israel, 17.2% were citizens of other countries and 0.1 percent were stateless people. 66.1% of the arrivals were men and 33.9% were women. 6.5% of foreigners and stateless persons came to our country in January, 5.8% in February, 9.7% in March, 7.7% in April, 7.3% in May, 9.5% in June, 11.6% in July, 11.3% in August, 8.1% in September, 7.4% in October, 7.5% in November and 7.6% in December.
There has been a significant increase in the number of visitors from the Gulf countries (except Iran and the United Arab Emirates) in 2018. Compared to 2017, the number of Saudi Arabia citizens arriving in Azerbaijan has increased by 2.2 times, Bahrain – 2.0 times, Kuwait – 1.8 times, Qatar – 1.6 times, Iraq – 7.9% and Oman – 7.4%. The number of arrivals from Iran decreased by 33.7% and from the United Arab Emirates it decreased by 8.3%. The total number of visitors from the Gulf countries amounted to 554.1 thousand person, and in general, one out of every five person came to our country was from the Gulf countries.
Compared to 2017, the number of arrivals from India increased by 2.7 times, Israel – 2.6 times, Egypt, Turkmenistan and South Korea – 1.7 times, China – 1.5 times.
In 2018, the number of arrivals from EU members increased by 6.7% and amounted to 112.5 thousand, and from the CIS countries increased by 3.8% and amounted to 1044.2 thousand person.
57.5% of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 41.5% - air and 1.0% - water transport.
The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad in 2018 increased by 19.5% compared to the previous year and amounted 4908.1 thousand person. 33.6% of the country citizens traveled to Iran, 29.2% - Georgia, 18.9% - Russian Federation, 12.3% - Turkey, 1.4% - Ukraine, 0.9% - United Arab Emirates, 3.7% to other countries. 65.3% of the travelers were men and 34.7% were women.
During this period, the number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan traveling to Iran increased by 71.8%, Georgia – by 4.2%, Turkey – 0.9% and Russian Federation - 0.3%.
In 2018, 81.4% of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 17.8% - air and 0.8% - water transport.
