Drug-related crimes
According to the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 4460 or 28,9 percent of 15420 criminal cases registered during January-June of the current year in the country were related to the illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, which is 4,4 percent less in comparison with indicator of the corresponding period of the previous year. 73,0 percent of these crimes were illegal purchase, storage, preparation, processing, transportation of drugs or psychotropic substances in excess of their personal consumption without the intention of sale, 24,6 percent concerned the same actions for sale, as well as the production, shipping or illegal sale of these substances, 1,7 percent the illegal cultivation of drug-containing plants, 0,7 percent the illicit trafficking of highly potent or toxic substances for sale.
During the reporting period, 2853 offenders were detained for the illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances. 44,2 percent of them had been previously prosecuted, which is 24,9 percent more compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Of the crimes in question, 1386 were committed by drug addicts, which is 1,5 percent less than the figure recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Furthermore, 2011 administrative offences related to the illicit trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances were recorded in the first half of the current year.
