Preparation of the scientific staff
One of the major priority directions of the state policy is the development of the scientific-technical potential of the country.
As of the beginning of the current year, doctorates operated at 114 institutions and organizations (40 higher education institutions and 74 research institutions and organizations), which play a significant role in strengthening the country's scientific human resource potential. A total of 3,123 students studied in doctoral programmes, of whom 50,9% were women. Of the total doctoral students, 85,0% were pursuing Doctor of Philosophy programmes, while 15,0% were pursuing Doctor of Science programmes.
Overall, 34,0% of doctoral students studied at research institutions and organizations, while 66,0% studied at higher education institutions. Among Doctor of Philosophy students, the corresponding shares were 30,3% and 69,7%, respectively, whereas among Doctor of Science students they were 54,9% and 45,1%, respectively.
Of the 2,653 doctoral students enrolled in Doctor of Philosophy programmes, 470 were studying economics, 454-technique, 248-philology, 191-medicine, 152-pedogogy, 130-biology, 120-political sciences, 115-law, 110-each history and earth sciences (220 in total), 82-chemistry, and 80-mathematics. The remaining students studied in other fields of science.
Among doctoral students enrolled in Doctor of Science programmes, 75 were studying philology, 64-biology, 47-economics, 40-technique, 28-each chemistry and history (56 in total), 27-law, 26-medicine, 21-earth sciences, 19-agrarian, 17-pedogogy, 13-physics, 11-mathematics. The remaining students studied in other fields of science.
Compared with 2024, the number of graduates from Doctor of Philosophy programmes increased by 41,4 percent in 2025, reaching 707, while the number of graduates from Doctor of Science programmes increased by 30,1 percent to 173.
In addition, 147 dissertation candidates were admitted to Doctor of Philosophy programmes in 2025, of whom 74,1 percent were women. A total of 120 dissertation candidates were admitted to Doctor of Science programmes, including 73 women. The majority of dissertation candidates were admitted in the fields of medicine, law, biology, history, physics, economics, technique and philology.
