Foreign trade relations
In January-March 2025 legal and natural entities of the Republic of Azerbaijan realized trade operations with their partners in 151 countries of the world, goods were exported to 96 countries and imported from 142 countries.
Taking into account value of statistically estimated exported crude oil and natural gas registered in the customs agencies but customs formalities of which not completed, the foreign trade turnover of the country in January-March 2025 made 11956,3 million USD. 6293,3 million USD or 52,6% of trade turnover made the export value, 5663,0 million USD (47,4%) – import value, and consequently positive trade balance reached to 630,3 million USD. In comparison with January-March 2024, foreign trade turnover increased in actual prices by 20,1% and in real terms - 3,9%. Import increased in real terms by 24,8%, while export decreased by 8,6%.
In January-March 2025 the export of non-oil-gas products made 771,9 million USD and compared to January-March 2024 it increased by 14,7% in actual prices and decreased by 8,5% in real terms.
According to the State Customs Committee data, 25,0% of foreign trade turnover of the country was with Italy, per 11,9% – Russia and Türkiye, 8,5% – China, 4,4% - Germany, 2,7% each with the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, 2,4% - Australia, 2,0% each with Romania and Croatia, 1,7% - Georgia, 1,6% each with Portugal and Mexico, 1,5% - Greece, 1,4% - Switzerland, 1,3% each with Bulgaria and Iran,1,1% each with Canada, USA and Ireland, 1,0% each with Brazil, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, while 9,8% of the trade operations were with other countries.
45,6% of exports represented the value of products shipped to Italy, 13,1% to Türkiye, 4,8% to the Czech Republic, 4,5% to Germany, 3,7% each to Croatia and Russia, 3,6% to Romania, 3,0% to Portugal, 2,8% to Georgia, 2,7% to Greece, 2,4% to Bulgaria, 1,9% each to Switzerland and Ireland, 1,2% to the United Kingdom, 0,8% to Ukraine, 0,7% to Serbia, 0,6% to Tunisia, 0,4% to China, 0,3% each to the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Belarus, 1,7% to other countries.
In the value of non-oil and gas product exports, the share of goods shipped to Russia (30,2%), Türkiye (17,4%), Georgia (10,4%), Switzerland (9,0%), Ukraine (6,6%), Kazakhstan (2,6%), the United Arab Emirates (2,5%), Belarus (2,2%), the USA (2,0%), Turkmenistan (1,6%), Germany (1,5%), Israel (1,5%), China (1,3%), Italy (1,3%), Uzbekistan (1,2%) predominated.
21,1% of the total value of imported goods to the country originated from Russia, 17,8% from China, 10,5% from Türkiye, 5,1% from Australia, 4,4% from the United Kingdom, 4,3% from Germany, 3,4% from Mexico, 2,7% from Iran, 2,3% from Canada, 2,1% each from Brazil and the USA, 1,8% from Italy, 1,7% from Kazakhstan, 1,5% each from Uzbekistan, Japan and Belarus, 1,3% from Korea, 1,1% each from Ukraine and Turkmenistan, 1,0% from India, and 11,7% from other countries.
In January-March 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year export of main types of products increased as follows: fresh fruits by 26,7%, fresh vegetables by 7,0%, sugar by 31,8%, fruit and vegetable cans by 15,3%, vegetable oils by 55,7%, tea by 10,6%, mineral fertilizers by 13,5%, polyethylene by 8,9%, unprocessed aluminum by 15,8%, cement clinkers by 31,0%, ferrous metal pipes by 62,5%, cotton yarn by 2,1%, ferrous metal rods by 67,3%, while the export of fruit and vegetable juices decreased by 29,7%, tobacco by 67,3%, margarine and other edible mixtures by 1,6%, natural grape wines and grape must by 20,0%, potatoes by 31,2%, polypropylene by 15,2%, cotton fiber by 28,8%, electricity by 38,7%, and bentonite clay by 20,4%.
In January-March 2025 compared to January-March 2024 import of wheat increased by 35,9%, butter, other dairy fats and pastes by 41,9%, raw sugar by 34,6%, tea by 74,7%, poultry and its by-products by 4,5%, fresh vegetable by 36,9%, cigarettes by 5,3-fold, passenger cars by 18,9%, rolled steel by 16,2%, ferrous metal rods by 97,4%, mineral fertilizers by 8,7%, rubber tires by 7,6%, polyethylene by 17,6%, household air conditioners by 5,0%, buses by 3,2-fold, household refrigerators by 50,0%, while the import of fresh fruit decreased by 15,4%, chocolate and chocolate products by 5,3%, flour confectionery by 12,8%, vegetable oils by 42,2%, potatoes by 1,5%, beef by 10,6%, pharmaceuticals by 20,2%, ferrous metal pipes by 37,2%, computing machinery, blocks and installations by 19,4%, trucks by 2,3%, synthetic detergents by 17,6%, furniture by 8,7%, washing machines by 0,4%, polypropylene by 1,7%, ferrous metal corners by 6,5%, cement by 11,6%.
