Previous year number of population of the country increased by 0,9% or 85651 persons and became to 10067108 persons for the state of the 1st January 2020. 52,8 percent of the population is urban, 47,2 percent is rural residents, 49,9 percent is male and 50,1 percent is women.

For the beginning of the year, 4,6 percent of the population of the country lives in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 22,8 percent - Baku city, 20,3 percent - Aran, 12,9 percent - Ganja-Gazakh, 9,4 percent – Lankaran, 30,0 percent – other economic regions. 

Population density made 116 person per square kilometer and this indicator was higher than the country level, 1072 persons in Baku, Lankaran – 156, Absheron economic regions – 154 .

141179 newborns by country in 2019 were registered by the region (city) Registration Departments of Ministry of Justice and this indicator made up 14,2 per 1000 person of population. 3356 of infants were twins, 108 triplets. This indicator in Daghlig Shirvan (16,7 per 1000 person), Kalbajar-Lachin (16,0), Aran (15,6), Guba-Khachmaz (15,5) and Yukhari Kharabakh (14,6) and economic regions was higher (14,3) than the country level.

55916 deaths were registered in the country last year and the number of deaths was decreased from 5,8 per to 5.6 1000 person.

Last year 63869 marriages and 17148 divorces were registered by the region (city) Registration Departments of Ministry of Justice and the number of marriages was in the same level (6.4) per 1000 person compared to the 2018 and divorces increased from 1,5 to 1,7. Marriages in Aran and Kalbajar-Lachin (6,9), Daghlig Shirvan (6,8), Sheki-Zagatala (6,6), Guba-Khachmaz and Yukhari Kharabakh (6,5) economic regions per 1000 person were higher than the country level (6.4), and divorces in Baku city and Kalbajar-Lachin (2,3), Absheron and Yukhari Kharabakh (2,0) economic regions were higher than the country level (1,7).

In 2019 the relevant authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Migration Service registered 2042 person arrivals to Azerbaijan for permanent residence and 1654 person departures from the country and migration positive balance made up 388 person.
