Current state of tourism

The situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as in other countries, has not passed unnoticed in the tourism sector of Azerbaijan too, and has led to a serious decline in this field since March. According to the State Border Service data, in January-July 2020 Azerbaijan received from 152 countries of the world 618,3 thousand or 2,9 times less foreigners and stateless persons compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

In order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection, the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the neighbor countries, as well as temporary restrictions on visits of citizens in most countries of the world, caused a sharp decrease in the number of arrivals in April-July of the current year and the visits made were mainly for non-tourism purposes.

In January-July of 2020, 29,1 percent of the arrivals were from Russian Federation, 26,1 percent – Georgia, 15,9 percent - Turkey, 7,4 percent - Iran, 2,1 percent - Ukraine, 2,0 percent – India, 1,9 percent - Saudi Arabia, 1,3 percent - the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, per 1,2 percent – Pakistan and Kazakhstan, per 1,1 percent - Kuwait and Turkmenistan, 0,9 percent - Great Britain, 0,8 percent - Iraq, per 0,7 percent – Uzbekistan and Belarus, 0,6 percent - Israel, 5,8 percent - were citizens of other countries and 0,1 percent were stateless people. 77,2 percent of the arrivals were men and 22,8 percent were women.

In January-July of current year the number of arrivals from China had decreased by 9,8 times, South Korea –9,2 times, Israel - 6,5 times, Japan and Poland - 6,3 times, Hungary –5,9 times, Iraq – 5,4 times, Oman and Saudi Arabia - 5,3 times, the United Arab Emirates - 5,2 times, Canada and the USA - 4,9 times, France – 4,8 times, Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands – 4,4 times, Turkmenistan - 3,9 times, Qatar – 3,8 times, Italy - 3,7 times, Kazakhstan – 3,5 times.

In general, the number of arrivals from EU member countries decreased by 4,8 times and amounted to 17,5 thousand persons, from Gulf countries it decreased by 3,6 times and amounted to 83,3 thousand persons and from the CIS countries it decreased by 3,0 times and amounted to 218,0 thousand persons.

68,6 percent of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 29,5 percent - air and 1,9 percent - water transport.

The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad decreased by 3,1 times compared with January-July 2019 and amounted to 996,5 thousand persons. 32,8 percent of the country citizens traveled to Iran, 29,2 percent - Georgia, 20,3 percent - Russian Federation, 10,0 percent – Turkey and 7,7 percent to other countries. 69,9 percent of the travelers were men and 30,1 percent were women. During this period, the number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan traveling to Iran decreased by 3,6 times, Turkey - 3,4 times, Georgia - 3,0 times, Russian Federation - 2,7 times.

In January-July 2020, 80,7 percent of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 17,2 percent - air and 2,1 percent - water transport.
