Current state of tourism

As a result of the crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic the decline in the tourism sector continues also the first months of current year. According to the State Border Service data, in January-February 2021 Azerbaijan received from 123 countries of the world 72,1 thousand or 5,9 times less foreigners and stateless persons and the visits made were mainly for non-tourism purposes..

In January-February 2021, 33,3 percent of the arrivals were from Russian Federation, 28,8 percent - Turkey, 14,9 percent - Iran, 10,4 percent – Georgia, 2,4 percent - Ukraine, 1,2 percent - Great Britain, 1,0 percent – Belarus, per 0,7 percent – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, 0,6 percent – Italy, 0,5 percent –Germany, 0,3 percent – USA, 4,5 percent - were citizens of other countries. 94,7 percent of the arrivals were men and 5,3 percent were women.

In January-February of current year compared with the corresponding period of last year the number of arrivals from Georgia decreased by 16,3 times, Kazakhstan – 11,1 times, Turkmenistan - 10,0 times, Uzbekistan – 6,3 times, Russian Federation – 5,1 times, Ukraine – 4,5 times, Great Britain – 4,4 times, Belarus – 2,6 times, Iran – 2,5 times, Turkey – 2.3 times.

In general, the number of arrivals from Gulf countries decreased by 5,6 times and amounted to 11,0 thousand persons, from the CIS countries it decreased by 5,2 times and amounted to 28,3 thousand persons and from EU member countries it decreased by 4,3 times and amounted to 2,8 thousand persons compared with January-February 2020.

73,0 percent of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 23,2 percent - air and 3,8 percent - water transport.

The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad decreased by 13,5 times compared with January-February 2020 and amounted to 60,9 thousand persons. 47,3 percent of the country citizens traveled to Turkey, 17,3 percent - Russian Federation, 10,5 percent – Georgia, 8,3 percent – Iran 16,6 percent to other countries. 77,7 percent of the travelers were men and 22,3 percent were women. During this period the number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan traveling to Iran decreased by 62,4 times, Georgia - 37,5 times, Russian Federation - 13,5 times, Turkey - 2,8 times compared with corresponding period of last year.

In January-February 2021, 30,5 percent of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 62,2 percent - air and 7,3 percent - water transport.
