Current state of tourism

As a result of the crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic the decline in the tourism sector continues in Azerbaijan, as in other countries. According to the State Border Service data, in January-November 2020 Azerbaijan received from 155 countries of the world 756,8 thousand or 3,9 times less foreigners and stateless persons compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

In order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection, the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the neighbor countries, as well as temporary restrictions on visits of citizens in most countries of the world, caused a sharp decrease in the number of arrivals in April-November of the current year and the visits made were mainly for non-tourism purposes.

In January-November 2020, 28,2 percent of the arrivals were from Russian Federation, 23,7 percent – Georgia, 19,5 percent - Turkey, 8,9 percent - Iran, 2,1 percent - Ukraine, 1,7 percent – India, 1,6 percent - Saudi Arabia, per 1,1 percent - the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan, per 1,0 percent Pakistan, Turkmenistan, per 0,9 percent – Kuwait and Great Britain, 0,8 percent – Belarus, per 0,7 percent – Uzbekistan and Iraq, per 0,5 percent – Germany and Israel, 5,0 percent - were citizens of other countries and 0,1 percent were stateless people. 80,3 percent of the arrivals were men and 19,7 percent were women.

In January-November of current year the number of arrivals from China decreased by 16,4 times, South Korea – 13,6 times, Israel - 10,7 times, Japan – 10,0 times, Poland – 9,9 times, Iraq – 9,2 times, Saudi Arabia - 8,6 times, Hungary – 8,4 times, the United Arab Emirates - 7,2 times, Oman and Canada – 7,1 times, the USA - 7,0 times, Turkmenistan - 6,1 times, France – 6,0 times, Germany and Qatar – 5,7 times, the Netherlands and Kazakhstan – 5,3 times, Great Britain – 5,2 times, Italy - 4,3 times.

In general, the number of arrivals from EU member countries decreased by 5,9 times and amounted to 22,1 thousand persons, from Gulf countries it decreased by 4,8 times and amounted to 105,3 thousand persons and from the CIS countries it decreased by 4,1 times and amounted to 259,3 thousand persons.

69,7 percent of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 27,9 percent - air and 2,4 percent - water transport.

The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad decreased by 4,5 times compared with January-November 2019 and amounted to 1135,0 thousand persons. 29,7 percent of the country citizens traveled to Iran, 26,8 percent - Georgia, 18,9 percent - Russian Federation, 15,7 percent – Turkey and 8,9 percent to other countries. 70,2 percent of the travelers were men and 29,8 percent were women. During this period, the number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan traveling to Iran decreased by 5,5 times, Georgia - 4,8 times, Russian Federation - 4,2 times, Turkey - 3,3 times.

In January-November 2020, 74,3 percent of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 22,9 percent - air and 2,8 percent - water transport.
