Current state of tourism

The situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as in other countries, has not passed unnoticed in the tourism sector of Azerbaijan too, and has led to a serious decline in this field since March. According to the State Border Service data, in January-September 2020 Azerbaijan received from 155 countries of the world 686,3 thousand or 3,5 times less foreigners and stateless persons compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

In order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection, the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the neighbor countries, as well as temporary restrictions on visits of citizens in most countries of the world, caused a sharp decrease in the number of arrivals in April-September of the current year and the visits made were mainly for non-tourism purposes.

In January-September 2020 28,1 percent of the arrivals were from Russian Federation, 24,9 percent – Georgia, 18,1 percent - Turkey, 8,3 percent - Iran, 2,1 percent - Ukraine, 1,8 percent – India, 1,7 percent - Saudi Arabia, 1,2 percent - the United Arab Emirates, per 1,1 percent – Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, 1,0 percent – Kuwait, 0,9 percent - Great Britain, per 0,7 percent – Uzbekistan, Iraq and Belarus, 0,6 percent - Israel, 5,8 percent - were citizens of other countries and 0,1 percent were stateless people. 78,7 percent of the arrivals were men and 21,3 percent were women.

In January-September of current year the number of arrivals from China had decreased by 14,0 times, South Korea – 12,2 times, Israel - 9,2 times, Poland – 9,0 times, Japan – 8,8 times, Iraq – 8,4 times, Saudi Arabia - 7,8 times, Hungary – 7,2 times, Oman and the USA - 6,4 times, Canada and the United Arab Emirates - 6,3 times, France – 5,7 times, Germany and Turkmenistan - 5,2 times, Qatar – 5,1 times, the Netherlands – 5,0 times, Great Britain – 4,9 times, Kazakhstan – 4,5 times, Pakistan - 4,4 times.

In general, the number of arrivals from EU member countries decreased by 5,5 times and amounted to 20,1 thousand persons, from Gulf countries it decreased by 4,6 times and amounted to 94,6 thousand persons and from the CIS countries it decreased by 3,7 times and amounted to 234,9 thousand persons.

69,0 percent of foreigners and stateless persons who came to our country used railway and automobile, 28,7 percent - air and 2,3 percent - water transport.

The number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan going abroad decreased by 3,9 times compared with January-September 2019 and amounted to 1073,4 thousand persons. 30,9 percent of the country citizens traveled to Iran, 27,7 percent - Georgia, 19,5 percent - Russian Federation, 13,2 percent – Turkey and 8,7 percent to other countries. 69,9 percent of the travelers were men and 30,1 percent were women. During this period, the number of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan traveling to Iran decreased by 4,6 times, Turkey - 3,5 times, Georgia - 4,1 times, Russian Federation - 3,5 times.

In January-September 2020, 76,7 percent of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited foreign countries using railway and automobile, 20,8 percent - air and 2,5 percent - water transport.
