The situation on the corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic affected the tourism sector of Azerbaijan, as in other countries, and has caused a serious decline in this area since March. compared to the corresponding period of previous year, there was a decrease in the indicators of hotels and similar establishments which are one of the main elements of tourism infrastructure in January-June 2020 in connection with implementation of the restrictive regime on the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and neighboring countries, as well as temporary restrictions on the travel of citizens in most countries of the world in order to prevent the spread of corona virus infection, the number of nights spent on hotels in the country decreased by 55.9% and amounted to 585.9 thousand.

In January-June of this year 58.8% of the nights in hotels were registered in Baku, 8.0% in Gusar, 8.1% in Gabala, 4.2% in Naftalan, 4.7% in Guba, 3.1% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 1.7% in Lankaran, 1.4% in Shabran, 1.1% in Mingachevir, 0.8% in Ganja and 8.1% in other districts (cities).

The number of nights spent by foreigners and stateless persons amounted to 340.8 thousand, representing 58.2% of total nights which is decreased by 64.3% less than January-June of previous year. 15.6% of the nights were citizens of the Russian Federation, 11.2% - United Arab Emirates, 11.2% - Saudi Arabia, 6.8% - Turkish citizens, 6.4% - India, 5.0% - citizens of Kuwait, 5.3% - Great Britain, 3.3% - Iranian citizens, 2.9% - Israel citizens, 2.2% - USA, 1.8% - Qatar citizens, 1.7% - Iraq, 1.5% - Pakistan, 1.5% - Kazakhstan, 1.6% - Germany, 1.2% - Italy, 1,2% - Ukraine, 1,0% - Georgia, 0.9% - Bahrain, 17.7% - citizens of other countries.

75.3% of the nights in hotels spent by foreigners and stateless persons were registered in Baku city, 7.2% in Gusar, 4.8% in Gabala, 4.5% in Naftalan, 3.7% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 2.3% in Guba, 2.2% in other districts and cities. The number of nights spent by the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan amounted to 245.1 thousand which is 34.4% less compared to January-June 2019.

In January-June of current year, hotels' revenues amounted to 72.0 million manat or 61.6% less than the corresponding period of previous year, 58.7% of which were services for the provision of rooms, 28.6% for catering services, 3.3% for treatment and health services, and 9.4% from other services.

In January-June 2020, the average level of use of the number of hotels in the country was 7.6% (21.6% on January-June of 2019). This indicator was 21.7% in Naftalan, 21.8% in Beylagan, 13.6% in Gusar, 12.8% in Shabran, 11.0% in Gabala, 10.4% in Bilasuvar, 9.2% in Jalilabad, 11.8% in Guba, 11.4% in Baku, 8.3% in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 9.2% in Sabirabad, 9.2% in Goychay, while in other cities and regions it was below average.
